AT&T is Spending $1B to Speed Up Fiber Construction
New deal with Corning is eligible for taxpayer funding

AT&T is spending more than $1 billion on “stick and click” fiber connectors from Corning that will make it faster and easier to build new fiber internet connections across the country.
The new fiber plugs require less technical expertise and fit in tighter spaces. That means build-outs will be cheaper and could reduce each installation’s carbon footprint by 50%, according to a press release from Corning about its Multifiber Pushlok® Technology.
The plugs will be installed by technicians, so customers won’t necessarily know if they have one at their address. However, it could mean you get access to fiber more quickly than you otherwise would have.
AT&T’s billion dollar purchase could also use other elements of Corning’s Evolv® portfolio of connectivity solutions, according to Corning.
Corning tech is eligible for taxpayer funding
The new Corning tech meets requirements for the federal BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment) program, according to the release. That means the new FlesNAP can be used in places where AT&T has agreed to public-private partnerships to build out its high-speed internet service.
The $42 billion in taxpayer funding is reserved for areas that can’t currently get download speeds of at least 100Mbps. Find out what portion of the funding is going to your state in this BEAD roundup from our friends over at Reviews.org.
