    AT&T Internet Availability

AT&T’s fiber internet and Internet Air 5G wireless services are available across most of the Midwest and South as well as wide swathes of California. AT&T also offers DSL internet, but it may not be available to new customers where you live.

    AT&T internet speeds

Although AT&T sells internet plans with speeds of up to 5,000Mbps, most AT&T users get much slower plans. That’s according to our speed test, which gives us proprietary data on a wide range of internet providers and their speeds.

We looked closely at AT&T’s speed-test data as part of our regularly updated Fastest Internet Providers report. AT&T doesn’t deliver the fastest internet speeds in the country, but customers’ average speeds are above the national average.

    Average download speed: 120.28Mbps

    Average upload speed: 312.38Mbps

    Average latency: 24.67 ms

    Total speed tests: 6,088

Why choose AT&T for internet service?

Choose AT&T’s fiber internet if you can get it—you can’t do any better than this when it comes to speed, reliability, and pricing. AT&T’s Internet 300 and Internet 500 plans both give you strong speeds fit for mid-sized households, and you get additional perks, including unlimited data and no annual contracts.

AT&T also regularly runs limited-time offer deals for new customers, so make sure to check if you can get a VISA rewards card when you sign up.

     Pros

    • No annual contracts
    • No equipment fees with fiber

     Cons

    • No DSL for new customers
    • Limited fiber availability

How AT&T compares to the competition

AT&T is about equal with its main fiber competitors, Google Fiber and CenturyLink. The latter both have cheaper gigabit plans, but AT&T offers faster speeds than either.

As for its cable-internet rivals, AT&T’s fiber plans are definitely the better deal—its gigabit plan costs as much as $20 less per month compared to Cox or Spectrum, and you get symmetrical upload and download speeds, too.

Cable is better than AT&T’s DSL internet, though, because you can get much faster speeds and more reliable service for an equal or lower price.
