Our Vyve Broadband internet review

Vyve Broadband is mostly a cable internet provider with a sliver of residential fiber. It has okay standard rates compared to the competition, but expect to pay more each month if you want unlimited data. But sometimes Vyve can be a real steal. The latest promotion discounts the Vyve 105 plan to $25 per month during the first year. That’s dirt cheap.

Pros:

  • No contracts
  • No installation fee

Cons:

  • Data caps
  • Equipment fees

Vyve Broadband’s speeds: What’s best for you?

Near-gigabit speeds are probably overkill for most homes. A family of five with a couple of data-gulping teens can easily get by on a 500Mbps plan. Small, younger families may find Vyve’s 105–200Mbps speeds enough for what they need. Be sure to run our How Much Speed Do I Need tool to see what’s best for you.

Vyve Broadband enforces data caps across the board—although the latest promotion for Vyve Gig includes unlimited data. Each 50GB chunk of data used beyond the monthly allowance adds $10 to your monthly statement. Use 4,000GB (4TB) or more on any plan during a single month, and Vyve will call to upgrade you to a commercial plan. If you don’t upgrade, Vyve will throttle your speeds to a turtle-slow 10Mbps until the next billing cycle.

By comparison, Xfinity enforces a 1.2TB data cap across the board, but you can pay $30 extra per month for unlimited data. Vyve Broadband’s fee is $5 cheaper each month, but you may not even need unlimited data. Most homes use about 586GB of data per month, according to the 4Q22 edition of OpenVault’s Broadband Insights Report.

Our favorite plan: We like the Vyve 500 plan, as it’s great for large families that need extra bandwidth for downloading games, streaming 4K content, and using VR.

Vyve Broadband provides mostly cable internet across 17 states. The company’s Network Management Disclosure says it has residential fiber internet, too, which we found scattered here and there using the National Broadband Map. It also had fixed wireless at one point, but Vyve currently doesn’t offer it to new customers.

The standard rates go up around $10 after the first year, which is something to consider given the equipment cost, optional unlimited data fee, data overage charges, and so on. The plans are somewhat expensive compared to the competition, so you should zero in on a discounted rate when they happen, like the Vyve 105 plan costing $25 per month during your first year.

Vyve Broadband internet installation, equipment, and contracts

Vyve Broadband doesn’t appear to have a self-installation option, nor did we find any self-installation documentation on its website. Vyve currently offers free installation anyway, so why not let someone else do all the work?

Vyve Broadband installation and equipment

Vyve Broadband supplies you with a wireless gateway, but you can use any compatible gateway purchased through retail. The Amazon Eero Pro 6 system is optional if you want whole-home coverage, as is the Secure Plus (now Eero Plus) subscription for added parental controls and security.

Vyve Broadband internet contracts

Vyve Broadband does not have contracts—not even with its prepaid internet plans.

Vyve Broadband wasn’t part of our annual customer satisfaction survey, so we can’t compare it to the competition in terms of feedback from surveyed customers. But we can compare the gigabit plans to understand better how it stacks up in the dollar-per-megabit wars.

As the chart shows, Xfinity has the fastest plan at a reasonable price: 2,000Mbps for $95 per month. The drawback is Xfinity has a 1.2TB monthly data limit, so you end up paying $125 per month if you want unlimited data.

Meanwhile, Vyve Gig costs nearly $5 more per month than Xfinity’s fastest plan when you add unlimited data. Plus, Vyve’s plan is 240Mbps slower. Between the two, Xfinity simply has the better dollar-per-megabit value if you can get it.

Finally, of the four cable internet providers listed above, Spectrum is the only one that does not have data caps or modem fees.

Is Vyve Broadband internet right for you?

Vyve Broadband isn’t as widely known as Spectrum and Xfinity. You’ll find it mostly in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Nebraska. Vyve lists 312 towns where it has service, and that’s not much when you scale out on a national level.

If you don’t have access to fiber or any other cable internet provider, Vyve Broadband has your ticket to decent cable internet speeds. We can safely bet it’s a far better option than DSL if you live in or around those areas.

But keep Vyve Broadband’s extra fees in mind as you consider one of its plans. The equipment and unlimited data fees can stack up, plus any additional TV plan you may select. We suggest getting a plan during one of Vyve’s limited-time offers, so you can enjoy some low-cost pricing—at least for the first year.

Methodology

Our HighSpeedInternet.com editorial team bases our analyses on customer input from our annual customer satisfaction survey, results from our speed test tool, and proprietary internet provider data on speeds and pricing. To strengthen our research, we look closely at provider contracts to get hard-to-find information on price hikes, data caps, and extra fees, and we keep tabs on the latest news reports and online reviews. When applicable, we also rely on our personal experiences testing these services.
