Frontier Offers 7 Gig Internet

Is the breakneck speed worth the money?

If gigabits are your game and lightning is your middle name, Frontier Communications has an offer for you: home internet speeds up to 7Gbps for $299.99 per month.

That’s a whopping 7,000Mbps, which is about seven times as fast as you can get from a lot of cable internet companies. It’s 70 times faster than you can get with DSL.

Speeds that fast are hard to imagine—and almost impossible to fully utilize. You would have to run a 4K video arcade while simultaneously sending and receiving astronomically large files to come even close.

Frontier includes Wi-Fi 7 equipment with the new speed tier

Frontier’s Fiber 7 Gig plan is ludicrously fast, but the company isn’t just selling bragging rights. Instead, it’s providing 7 Gig customers with Eero’s latest Wi-Fi 7-enabled router plus one extra mesh device. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Connectivity for up to 200 devices at a time
  • Coverage for up to 2,500 square feet
  • Wi-Fi speeds up to 4.3Gbps
  • Wired speeds up to 9.4Gbps

To fully utilize the colossal capacity, you would also need compatible computers and phones. Learn more about the Wi-Fi 7 standard in our expert library.

Is the new Frontier 7 Gig plan worth the money?

Frontier is one of the first major internet providers to offer speeds of 7Gbps or faster. It’s a nice feather in their hat, and we love fast speeds around here.

But at $299.99 every month, the new Frontier offering doesn’t come cheap. It’s also more speed than almost anyone needs . If you have cash to invest in fast internet, it might be better spent on upgrades like a new router or a mesh extender.

Here’s how Frontier’s new plan compares to other fiber internet options from the company.

Where can you get 7 gig speeds from Frontier?

Frontier offers both fiber and DSL internet service in 25 states. Its fiber network reaches about 7.2 million addresses, and it plans to make its new 7 Gig plan available throughout that footprint.

Cities and suburbs are most likely to have access to fiber, and the biggest fiber cities for Frontier are Los Angeles, Dallas, Tampa, Toledo, and Cleveland.

In total, Frontier fiber reaches about 3.5% of addresses tracked by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), while Optimum reaches about 1.6% of addresses, and Google Fiber reaches 1.1%. Ziply Fiber reaches about 0.5% of addresses.

Frontier pricing policies to know

The monthly $299.99 price tag for Frontier 7 Gig is good for a year, and it covers the following:

  • Wi-Fi equipment
  • Professional installation
  • Unlimited data
  • Premium security software
  • Premium tech help

It’s pretty straightforward, but you could be charged an extra $10 every month if you don’t sign up for automated payments from your bank account. You’ll also see taxes added to the final bill.

We haven’t yet seen all the details for the 7 Gig plan, but other plans from Frontier go up by $10 per month after the first year. There are no required contracts, but you could be locked into a contract (with early cancellation fees) if you agree to a Visa card promotion when you sign up.

Our verdict: You don’t need 7 gigs

We’re impressed with Frontier’s new offering, and it’s fabulous that it’s available to the entire fiber network. But we’ve said it before: multi-gig speeds are much faster and much more expensive than most households need.

Even big, busy households are better off with speeds of about 500Mbps and a price tag of less than $100 per month.

Fortunately, It’s easy to get plans at those speeds from most cable and fiber internet providers. You can get speeds of around 200Mbps from a handful of 5G home internet providers, too.
