Is 4chan Down?

How to troubleshoot a 4chan outage and get back online

After the massive hacking that took 4chan temporarily offline in April 2025, you might be wary and wondering, “If 4chan goes down again, how will I know what’s going on?”

Well, you’ve come to the right troubleshooting guide. If you keep reading, you’ll get the tools you need to know whether 4chan’s just experiencing the usual aches and pains of a 20+-year-old site, or if there’s a massive outage—or if the problem’s actually coming from your end. (Hey, it happens.)

How to troubleshoot 4chan

If 4chan isn’t loading or working properly, the issue could stem from the site itself, but it could also come from your device settings or even your internet connection. Follow the steps below to quickly identify the problem and get back online.

Check for a 4chan outage

Before diving into fixes on your end, confirm whether 4chan is down for everyone or just you.

Unfortunately, there’s no official site to check 4chan’s status. And due to the site’s largely anonymous nature, there aren’t any verified 4chan accounts on sites like Facebook or Instagram. Still, there are ways to check the website status through third parties:

  • Visit a site status checker such as DownDetector or IsItDownRightNow.
  • Check social media platforms like X (Twitter) or Reddit to see user outage reports in real time.

If 4chan is experiencing a server-side issue, there’s not much you can do except wait for the service to be restored. Luckily, outages are usually resolved within a few hours, depending on the cause.

No outage? Try these steps next

If 4chan appears to be up and running for others, the issue is likely on your end. Work through the following troubleshooting steps:

1     Refresh the page to resolve temporary loading errors.

2    Clear your browser cache and cookies to remove any corrupted files.

3    Disable browser extensions that may interfere with how 4chan loads (such as ad blockers, script blockers, or privacy tools).

4    Check your Domain Name System (DNS) settings and consider switching to a public DNS service like Google Public DNS or Cloudflare DNS.

5    Try a different browser.

6    Try a different device.

7     Restart your device to resolve lingering system or network issues.

If none of these work, then it’s time to look at your Wi-Fi connection for issues.

Check your internet connection

If you’ve tried all of my recommended steps and still can’t access 4chan, then the issue may be related to your internet service provider or home network connection. But how do you know if that’s the case? The quickest way is to try our speed test tool. And then, if your internet is in fact under the weather, you can use our internet connection guide to troubleshoot.
