Best Fiber Internet Provider of 2025: Google Fiber

Google Fiber’s powerful home fiber connections earn the title of America’s Best Fiber ISP

Fiber internet is definitely back on top in 2025. From our performance data and our customer surveys, we are seeing a huge advantage for fiber providers. We also wanted to know which of those fiber providers was the best of the best in the U.S.

Every year, we feed millions of internet service provider (ISP) data points into our provider analysis methodology to see how services compare. When we narrowed our analysis, we found that Google Fiber distinguishes itself, yet again, as the nation’s top fiber ISP.

Google Fiber’s victory is due to consistently high quality in all categories measured: speed, value, reliability, and customer feedback.

Google Fiber’s speeds join a new class of internet performance that it only shares with one other provider, Brightspeed. Google Fiber’s plans offer outstanding value with one of the best speed-to-dollar ratios. Google Fiber also received outstanding customer feedback in our latest surveys, with customers responding with nearly unanimous complete satisfaction.

Few providers can achieve and maintain such a high standard across the board as Google Fiber has done for the past several years.

Performance data

Google Fiber has always been fast; its plans start at symmetrical gig speeds and go up to 8Gbps. However, this year, it achieved something special even for Google Fiber: its average speeds clocked in at 279Mbps, vastly outperforming every provider in our analysis—except for the year’s fastest provider, Brightspeed.

When we measure ISPs using our speed test data, Google Fiber is always at or near the top of the list. But typically, all the fastest providers are on each other’s heels. The vast contrast between Google Fiber and nearly every other provider emphasizes the massive performance advantage it delivers to its customers.

These performance achievements don’t happen by accident. Google Fiber has constantly evolved over the years, and 2024 was no exception. In May, the provider reinforced its continuing commitment to keep its network on the cutting edge by announcing that it would provide all future expansions with upgraded XGS-PON fiber networks, a significant upgrade over the GPON used by most providers. XGS-PON is a fiber internet technology capable of 10Gbps symmetrical speeds.

Furthermore, in the same announcement, Google Fiber said that it was experimenting with an even grander fiber technology, Nokia’s 25G-PON, a technology so advanced that Google Fiber had to develop its own experimental equipment to begin testing. When deployed, Nokia’s 25G-PON will be capable of incredible 25Gbps symmetrical speeds.

We have our money on Google Fiber as the first ISP to bring this next-level fiber tech to the masses.

Better customer equipment

Our performance data is based on real-world internet speed tests, meaning that it measures the same speeds that customers experience. Google Fiber distinguishes itself by ensuring its fast network speeds reach customers’ devices by providing top-tier equipment.

All Google Fiber customers on a gigabit or faster plan can receive a Wi-Fi 6E mesh router and up to two extenders at no extra cost. We think this is one of the most significant factors to Google Fiber’s clear performance edge. The company makes it easy and affordable for customers to get the necessary equipment to use its top-tier fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections.

Customer feedback

Google Fiber customers gave the best feedback for customer service in addition to outstanding performance metrics and excellent overall customer feedback in our national surveys. This didn’t surprise us in the least, as Google Fiber has one of the most customer-friendly policies we’ve seen from a modern ISP.

These days, it’s common to see ISPs avoid answering the phone by implementing automated systems in AI chatbots. Google Fiber does the opposite. It guarantees that if a customer calls in for help, a live agent will answer that call in 10 seconds or less.

Customers want fiber in 2025

This year’s customer surveys also enlightened us on how customers feel about the advantages of fiber internet—they want symmetrical upload and download speeds.

One of the key highlights of fiber is that it offers symmetrical speeds, meaning your upload speed is equally as fast as your download speed. Most customers don’t need a lot of upload speed, which is emphasized by the past dominance of cable internet in the United States, which offers upload speeds that are only a fraction of the download speeds.

I’ve always thought that if customers had all the correct information, they wouldn’t place such a high priority on getting the symmetrical speeds of a fiber internet plan—it turned out I was wrong.

This year, I asked 10,000 internet customers what importance they placed on upload speed when shopping for an internet plan. Before they answered, survey participants were briefed on the little influence upload speed has on the vast majority of common internet uses. Regardless, customers overwhelmingly reported that upload speed was an important or very important factor when choosing a service.

First, this told us that customers don’t want to be told what they do and don’t need. Second, it told us that customers are beginning to prioritize a performance advantage only fiber can deliver: upload speed.

This doesn’t mean every other internet type is down for the count. Cable internet technology is on the brink of gigabit symmetrical speeds with DOCSIS 4.0; however, ISPs have been slow to implement the tech, as evidenced by fiber’s huge advantage in this year’s performance data.

Google Fiber’s one weakness

Unfortunately, we haven’t found the perfect ISP yet. Google Fiber has one big weakness: It offers no budget internet plans. While we are impressed with the value of its plans, prices start at $70 per month, firmly placing Google Fiber’s services beyond the reach of many Americans. Our methodology heavily penalizes the absence of an internet plan priced at $50 per month or less—Google Fiber misses that mark by a lot.

While the lack of budget plans does highlight a key weakness of Google Fiber, the fact that it is still powered through our methodology as America’s best fiber ISP shows how strong its performance is in the other data sets we track, such as speed, outages and reliability, and customer feedback. If Google Fiber fits a sub-$50 per month plan into its roster, it might be the first provider ever to receive a perfect score from HighSpeedInternet.com.
