Is WhatsApp Down?

How to troubleshoot a WhatsApp outage and get back online

WhatsApp outage hero image

For most people, WhatsApp usually works just fine, but when it doesn’t, it’s a frustrating experience. How else will you send messages to friends overseas or make phone calls without digging into your monthly minutes?

But just because WhatsApp is struggling for you, that doesn’t mean it’s down. Sure, the problem could be on WhatsApp’s side, but it also might not. The only way to find out—and to get reconnected—is to do a little digging. Keep reading, and I’ll tell you exactly where to start and what to look for.

How to troubleshoot WhatsApp

Most WhatsApp issues—like messages not sending, calls failing, or the app not opening—can be fixed in just five to 15 minutes with a few simple checks. Just follow my recommendations.

Check for a WhatsApp outage

When WhatsApp isn’t working, the first thing you should do is check whether there’s an outage. Here’s how:

  • Check the Meta’s status page and visit official @WhatsApp channels for announcements.
  • Use third-party outage trackers to confirm whether the app is down.
  • Reach out to someone you know to ask if WhatsApp is working for them.

If you find out that WhatsApp is down, then that’s the end of your troubleshooting journey. Now you just need to wait and hope that WhatsApp’s engineers will get the service back online soon. If not, it’s time to look into some other causes.

No outage? Try these steps next

If WhatsApp is still up globally, here are a few things you can try that might fix the issue:

1      Fully close and restart the app.

2     Restart your phone to clear temporary glitches.

3     Update WhatsApp from the App Store or Google Play.

4     Check your account status to make sure you’re verified and unbanned.

5     Try a different access method, like the WhatsApp website or another device.

6     Reinstall the app.

7     Clear your cache (Android only).

Check your internet connection

If you’ve tried all these troubleshooting suggestions and WhatsApp still isn’t working, the culprit could be your internet connection. In a way, that’s good news. As annoying as glitchy internet is, you can usually fix it fairly easily.

But how do you know if your internet’s at fault? Check your Wi-Fi connection with our speed test tool, then use our internet troubleshooting guide to find the problem and its solution.

Upgrade your internet plan

If you’re seeing a problem with your internet, the next step is to fix it. You can upgrade to a faster plan or a different internet type—or you can switch internet providers altogether. That might sound drastic, but it’s often the best solution. After all, it doesn’t make sense to stick with a service that’s already failing to deliver.
