The Los Angeles area offers excellent broadband coverage for its nearly 10 million residents, with speeds of 250Mbps available to over 93% of homes in LA county. The majority of residents don’t yet have access to fiber, making cable internet the primary connectivity workhorse in the city of angels. Two new providers, T-Mobile and Starlink now offer service in nearly 100% of LA, giving residents new choices for the first time in ages.

Spectrum’s cable internet is the area’s dominating service covering 91% of LA homes, and for good reason, with fast and reliable speeds. For Angelenos without access to fiber, Spectrum is likely the most practical choice of ISP, even when considering T-Mobile and Starlink. In addition to high-quality internet service, Spectrum is known for creating high-value plans through very customer-friendly policies (no data caps) and relatively low pricing.

Approximately 36% of LA county has access to fiber internet through AT&T, EarthLink, or Frontier, which packs the benefits of high bandwidth, symmetrical speeds, and superior reliability; we think Frontier offers customers the value for the money.

Here’s a look at the best internet in Los Angeles.

What is the fastest internet provider in Los Angeles?

AT&T and Frontier are the fastest internet providers in Los Angeles. Not every neighborhood in LA has access to AT&T and Frontier’s fiber internet. But if you’re lucky enough to have it, you can get speeds up to 5,000 Mbps (5 Gbps)—astoundingly fast for a residential internet plan.

Because Earthlink uses AT&T’s fiber infrastructure, it also has plans with speeds up to 5,000 Mbps.

Realistically, though, most Los Angeles residents can get the fastest Wi-Fi from Spectrum. The cable provider offers a range of plans, the fastest of which tops out at 1,000 Mbps speeds. And yeah, that’s not multigigabit fast, but honestly, nobody needs a 2,000 Mbps or 5,000 Mbps plan anyway.

Spectrum’s gigabit plan gives you all the bandwidth you need to support a huge household of Wi-Fi users. It’s enough to make sure everyone can routinely game, stream, download, and make Zoom calls on multiple devices throughout the day without slowdowns or buffering.

How much internet speed do you need?

5 Mbps

  • Browsing
  • Streaming music
  • Ideal for single user

10 Mbps

  • Streaming HD videos
  • Casual gaming
  • Ideal for 1-2 people

20 Mbps

  • Ultra HD streaming
  • Frequent gaming
  • Ideal for 2-4 people

40+ Mbps

  • Streaming multiple shows in HD
  • Simultaneous gaming
  • Ideal for 4+ people

Most households need at least 25 Mbps of download speed and 3 Mbps of upload speed. While most common internet activities can work with fairly slow speeds, your network easily gets bogged down if you have multiple devices using the internet at the same time. That’s especially true if you have multiple people working from home or learning remotely.

If you don’t know what speed you need, you can test your current internet speed to give yourself a reference point and take it from there.

What is the cheapest internet provider in Los Angeles?

The cheapest practical internet plan in the Los Angeles area is the Spectrum Internet® plan, which costs $50 per month for 300 Mbps. That’s enough speed to support a small- or mid-sized household, ensuring that four or five people can get smooth Wi-Fi as they stream, game, and join video calls for work.

AT&T’s Internet 300 fiber plan packs a little more value at $55 per month for 300 Mbps symmetrical speeds. But the best plan you can get, if you’re lucky enough to live in an area with Frontier’s fiber plans, is the Fiber 500 for $44.99 per month.

Some great perks come with choosing either AT&T or Spectrum. Both providers give you unlimited data and don’t require you to sign an annual contract, so you can cancel any time without facing early termination fees.

If you’re on a tight budget and have minimal internet needs, consider a 5G home internet service from T-Mobile or Verizon. Both providers get you solid speeds for a fixed rate of just $50 month, with unlimited data and no extra fees for installation or equipment.

T-Mobile’s 5G Home Internet (which got stellar reviews in our annual customer satisfaction survey) offers a bundle deal with Philo TV, and you can get the plan for $30 a month when you pair it with a T-Mobile Magenta MAX family phone plan. Verizon 5G Home Internet offers its 5G Home plan for 50% off to customers who also have select Verizon phone plans.

What are the fiber internet providers in Los Angeles?

The two primary fiber providers in Los Angeles are AT&T and Frontier. AT&T has the best speeds and better customer satisfaction rankings. Frontier is a great option too, with no data caps and fair prices.

Unfortunately, you can’t get fiber everywhere in Los Angeles. But if you can find a fiber-optic plan in your area, we recommend you go for it. Fiber gives you a lot of bang for your buck, and fiber’s symmetrical upload and download speeds make it especially useful for creatives and content creators who need robust upload bandwidth to work over the cloud and post online.

EarthLink is another fiber internet provider available in the LA area, but it works a bit differently. EarthLink leases services through other providers’ networks, kind of like a middleman between you and the ISP that owns the infrastructure—which in the case of LA is usually AT&T.

The most widely available high-speed internet providers in Los Angeles are Spectrum, EarthLink, AT&T, Frontier, and Verizon 5G Home Internet. Spectrum is your best bet because its high-speed plans are available to the widest number of people.

AT&T and EarthLink have fiber in some parts of LA, but in most parts of the city they only offer DSL internet. DSL is super slow and not worth your money if you can get cable or fiber instead. Verizon 5G Home Internet is available across virtually the entire city; its 5G fixed wireless connection isn’t particularly reliable according to our sources, but you can’t beat the low price or bountiful perks.
