Ann Arbor Residential Internet Coverage

Ann Arbor is a cultural hub of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, with one of the state's largest universities, a huge football fan base, and plenty of research and business. That being said, internet access is key for many of the largest industries in Ann Arbor.

AT&T offers both DSL and fiber internet to Ann Arbor, although the provider's DSL coverage is more widespread than its fiber coverage, reaching all of Ann Arbor.

Frontier Communications has a substantial presence in western Ann Arbor, as well as the southern half of the city. Western neighborhoods that enjoy Frontier Communications access include Scio and Foster, while covered southern areas include Pittsfield, Washtenaw Avenue, and Stone School Road. Coverage stops just south of Sunset Road.

Ann Arbor residents enjoy full access to high-speed internet through Windstream. Xfinity is similar to Windstream, although its coverage map extends far beyond the limits of Ann Arbor to cover more rural and suburban parts of the Lower Peninsula.

Northwest Ann Arbor is covered by Charter. Charter's cable network reaches neighborhoods like Scio, Foster, Miller Avenue, and Dexter Road.

Through Eaglenet, internet is available throughout all of Ann Arbor, stopping south of the city limits. This mirrors the service map of ACD.net, which stretches to include all of Ann Arbor but stops shortly outside of the city limits on all sides.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Satellite internet is widely available, but offers slower speeds due to a far-traveling signal.

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

It's hard to get an agent on the phone, and I'm paying more for not getting the service package I should get for internet service, which is 1G. I'm getting 350 or less. I have to constantly monitor it to see if I'm getting what I'm paying for.

I have had a TERRIBLE experience with Xfinity. My partner and I are off-campus college students who need wifi for school and no matter how many times we troubleshooted, our wifi wouldn't work at all. We successfully set up the modem after following the directions and the Xfinity app would say that we were online, but our own network wouldn't show up on any of our devices no matter what we did. Not only that, but random people from surrounding apartments were able to connect to our wifi even though we had a password that we didn't share with anybody. I can't tell you how many times we've restarted our modem, and even unplugged and plugged it back in. It's been extremely frustrating trying to get any assignments done while not being able to access our own wifi, let alone getting it to work properly in the first place. We've looked at all the help/advice online, tried chatting with Xfinity, and even tried getting connected to a real agent (we were on hold and were never able to reach one), but to no avail. We tried getting a service appointment set up for as soon as possible, but it was scheduled for A WEEK from now. We simply don't have the time to wait around. We have been at it for two days straight now, and we've decided to stop our service and return the modem in favor of finding a better service. I'm very disappointed and frankly just sad. Thank you for wasting our time with sub-par services and severely lacking customer service. To anyone thinking about using Xfinity, don't.

Internet speed is outstanding. We have very few problems with internet going out, and no problems with multiple devices on the wireless. Cost is a bit high, but it's the only hi-speed provider in the area. We haven't had to call for service, so I can't really review that aspect.

Methodology

HighSpeedInternet.com compares internet providers within cities and metro areas to give customers the most relevant insights into their internet options. When comparing providers, we consider the following:

  • Provider coverage areas
  • Advertised speeds
  • Real-world speeds (speed test data)
  • Customer feedback
  • Other relevant localized data

We source localized coverage data displayed on our coverage maps from the FCC coverage database, which is updated every six months. For the most current summary of providers in your area, we recommend you use our zip code search tool, which offers the most recent coverage data straight from internet service providers (ISPs).

Our city overviews compare advertised provider speeds. We may also include real-world speed data gathered from millions of annual speed test results. To process our speed test data, we first filter out outliers and providers with low test counts. We then calculate speed averages with every ISP subject to the same parameters.

We gather ISP customer feedback data from our comprehensive annual surveys and direct customer feedback submitted to HighSpeedInternet.com. Unless stated otherwise, average ratings are calculated nationally.
