Our Hargray internet review
Hargray is mostly a cable internet provider servicing South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. It also has some residential fiber internet in Florida and Georgia and DSL internet the company doesn’t advertise. Overall, Hargray may be your only option if the bigger brands like Spectrum and Xfinity are out of reach.
Pros
- No data caps
- No contracts
Cons
- Limited availability
- Hidden fees

Hargray’s speeds: What’s best for you?
The Internet 300Mbps plan is your best bet for a decent balance between speed and price. There’s enough bandwidth for a small family, but if you have data-hogging teens in the house, consider the 500Mbps plan instead.
Alternatively, the Internet 1000Mbps plan is overkill for most homes—until 8K streaming becomes the norm. Hargray’s disclaimer says the plan’s max download speeds are 945–950Mbps, indicating that it’s still using Gigabit Ethernet-based equipment, which doesn’t reach full gigabit speeds.
Hargray’s data caps
Hargray doesn’t enforce data caps or fees for unlimited data, so there’s nothing to see here.
Our favorite plan: The Internet 300Mbps plan is best for most homes. Actually, we prefer the Internet 500Mbps plan, but it’s a little expensive compared to similar plans from bigger rivals like Spectrum and Xfinity. The prices only go up once the promotional period ends, too.
The big callout here is how Hargray handles fiber internet. Generally, you can get a plan with symmetrical speeds for one monthly payment. Hargray charges an extra $10 per month for Power Boost, which enables equal upload and download speeds. Without Power Boost, your fiber internet has the same download/upload speed ratio as its cable internet service.

Plan pricing and promotional periods differ across Hargray’s 18 markets, but the fees are the same. The one to notice here is the optional Power Boost fee, which enables symmetrical speeds on Hargray’s fiber internet.
Hargray internet installation, equipment, and contracts
Hargray charges $50 for a pro install (unless it’s running a promotion waiving the fee), while the self-install option is free. Read on for more info about the equipment and contracts.
Hargray equipment
From what we can tell by Hargray’s videos, the company uses equipment like the Arris SBG8300 gateway (modem/router combo) for cable internet, although Hargray calls it a “router.” The “wall-to-wall” system is the Airties Air, which is only supplied to internet providers like AT&T (but you can buy on Amazon). Hargray undoubtedly offers newer equipment than these two examples, given they use the older Wi-Fi 5 standard, but we couldn’t find the actual models in use.
Hargray internet contracts
Hargray doesn’t have contracts, but the company charges a $99 fee if you discontinue service during the first 12 months.

Read disclaimers
Hargray can’t compete with the bigger brands in price. When we compare gigabit plans, it’s the most expensive in the table above, while Xfinity is the cheapest. The same is true when we compare the 500Mbps plans: Hargray is the most expensive of the five—and that’s during the discounted promotional pricing.
And while we compare Hargray with other cable internet providers in the table, we have to call out Hargray’s extra fee for symmetrical speeds on its fiber plans. You’ll pay $85 per month for its Internet 500Mbps plan versus $65 per month for a similar plan from AT&T if it’s available—which doesn’t charge you extra for symmetrical speeds.
Is Hargray internet right for you?
Hargray is ideal if you want speeds faster than DSL, and the bigger brands like Spectrum and Xfinity are unavailable. It’s a bit more expensive than the nationwide internet providers, plus it charges an extra fee for symmetrical speeds if you have fiber—which other fiber providers don’t do.
And, to be honest, the Internet 1000Mbps plan is a little misleading. The plan’s advertisement reads “up to 1,000Mbps download speed,” but then the disclaimer says, nope, your max speed is between 940–950Mbps. Other cable internet providers advertise similar bandwidth-limited plans as 940Mbps.
