Xfinity’s offers a variety of high-value plans that provide a lot of internet speed for the money. And as a cable ISP, its services are generally fast and reliable. The downside is that Xfinity charges all the usual extra fees, like equipment rental and early termination fees, and maintains the typical ISP policy annoyances, like data caps and price hikes. While, these fees and policies aren’t exactly budget-friendly, you’re likely to encounter them with other ISPs, as well.

Xfinity’s speeds: What’s best for you?
Xfinity has great plan variety when it comes to speed and your budget. Just keep in mind that Xfinity’s pricing varies by region.
For the average household, we think the Fast plan delivers the most bang for your buck. At 500Mbps for $45 per month, it finds good balance between speed and price. In the age of gigabit plans, 500Mbps may not seem as impressive a speed as it once did, but even by modern usage standards, it’s a lot of bandwidth. With 500Mbps speeds, you could run 7 simultaneous 4k video streams with enough bandwidth leftover for all your background processes and internet browsing. Generally, we recommend you have about 100Mbps of bandwidth for every member of your household.
Larger families and heavy internet users could consider the Gigabit internet plan. At $60 per month, it provides 1,000Mbps of internet speed, which is more than enough internet speed for just about anyone.
Those with tighter budgets can take a closer look at the Connect More plan, it’s $10 less per month than the Fast plan but provides over half of the speed (300Mbps).
Xfinity’s high-tier Gigabit and Gigabit Extra plans only make sense if you have the most extreme bandwidth needs. Think households with eight or more people or those who frequently need to download huge amounts of data.

Xfinity internet plans have a 1.2 TB data cap—plenty of data for the average customer. But if you do go over, Xinifty gives customers a pass for the first data overage. After that, you get hit with a $10 fee for every 50 GB over your cap, up to a maximum of $100 a month.
There are two ways you can get unlimited data with an Xfinity internet plan:
- You can sign up for xFi Complete for an extra $25 per month. It also includes an upgraded Xfinity gateway (modem/router) rental.
- You can add unlimited data to any Xfinity internet plan for $30 per month.
Our favorite plan: Xfinity’s Fast internet plan provides 500Mbps for $45 per month, and is one of the better cable internet deals offered anywhere in the market. For some perspective, Spectrum, another huge cable ISP, sells customers 300Mbps for $50 per month. The country’s next largest cable ISP, Cox, charges $59.99 for just 250Mbps.
Xfinity’s Fast internet plan is a good deal matched only by a few fiber ISPs.

Xfinity’s installation fee is generally $100, though that is subject to change based on region. The equipment rental and other fees are standard for cable internet providers.
Xfinity internet installation, equipment, and contracts
At $100, Xfinity’s install fee is something you want to try to avoid by opting to self-install. Xfinity’s equipment is pretty good, and it has some attractive offers and features that make renting equipment tempting. Regarding contracts, most Xfinity plans do not require a term contract. But keep in mind that promo pricing ends after 12 months.
Xfinity installation
For $100, Xfinity sends a technician to your residence to connect your home to its network and set up your equipment. If your residence already has an active Xfinity internet connection, you can just self-install for free.
Self-installation with Xfinity is easy. All you need to do is connect your equipment to power and connect an active coaxial cable to the back of the modem. From there, the Xfinity app walks you through the rest of the process.
Xfinity equipment
Most new Xfinity customers who decide to rent their equipment will get an XFi internet gateway, a modem/router combo that runs on the DOCSIS 3.1. protocol. The XB-8 has tri-band Wi-Fi, four Ethernet ports, and advanced security. It also integrates well with the Xfinity App’s control and troubleshooting features.
Xfinity bundles its equipment rental and unlimited data feature with the xFi complete add-on, which costs $25 a month on top of your regular rates.
Xfinity internet contracts
Xfinity plan contracts vary by region and plan, but most Xfinity internet plans typically don’t require a contract. With no term contracts required, you won’t have to worry about early termination fees.
Xfinity internet plans do have price hikes after the promotional period ends. The amount of varies between regions and plans.

When you look at the numbers, Xfinity’s plans offer more speed for less money than other big cable ISPs. And it probably has one of the best cable infrastructures in the country. Xfinity’s main competitors are AT&T, CenturyLink, and Verizon. We recommend choosing one of these ISPs over Xfinity only if you can get a fiber internet plan. Fiber is both faster and more reliable than cable internet, and comes with the benefit of symmetrical speeds (faster upload speed compared to cable). Unfortunately, fiber isn’t available in a lot of areas.

While there are many factors to consider when purchasing a new internet service, speed and price are among the most important, and Xfinity scores top-marks for both. And because it’s such a big ISP, Xfinity has a lot features, options, and bundles while maintaining a decent level of quality in it’s services. Value-wise, Xfinity internet is worth the money.
Xfinity doens’t require a contract for most plans, so it’s a good month-to-month option. Xfinity also offers a prepaid internet plan, but it’s slow, pricey, and requires a modem purchase—not a great deal.
