What is the best internet provider in Louisville?

AT&T provides the best internet service in Louisville, Kentucky. In the home of the Louisville Slugger, AT&T whomps it out of the park with the fastest speeds and the best internet type in the form of an all-powerful fiber-optic network.

But AT&T’s fiber internet isn’t available everywhere in Louisville—and it’d be a crying shame to ignore the other Wi-Fi companies out here in Derby City. Spectrum is a great option because it’s available anywhere in the city (as well as in its Indiana-based neighbor, New Albany). It delivers cable internet with easy-peasy plan options and solid speeds.

Windstream, which provides some internet coverage southeast of the Gene Snyder Freeway, offers low-cost options over DSL that are well worth looking into if you want cheap Wi-Fi.

Mediacom barely has a presence in Louisville but may be a worthy pick if you work from home, game frequently online, or prefer your vintage Muhammad Ali videos in 4K resolution. Its monthly data caps on upper-tier plans are massive, letting you use the internet practically to your heart’s content.

There are also a couple regional internet providers, the most popular of which is Ohio-based TOAST.net. TOAST.net has been in the game since 1996 and offers solid DSL plans with unlimited data—no bundling with phone or TV necessary, as sometimes happens with other DSL providers. Sweet.

And of course there’s HughesNet and Viasat, both satellite internet providers. With nationwide availability, these two will get you internet when no others can, namely if you’re living out in the Kentucky countryside or other rural areas that don’t have infrastructure for cable, DSL, or fiber internet.

DSL:

DSL provides internet service via phone cables and is up to ten times faster than dial-up service.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

Highest-rated internet providers in Louisville

T-Mobile’s budding 5G Home Internet service got the best rankings in our annual customer satisfaction survey. It came in first for price, speed, customer service, and overall satisfaction, beating out a number of much larger competitors. T-Mobile customers have reported that their internet speeds regularly meet their needs, and 5G home internet customers as a whole gave this budding connection type a huge thumbs up in this year’s survey.

AT&T also ranks really well in the survey, taking second place in the critical categories of speed, price, and overall satisfaction. Spectrum ranked a bit lower but still fared well, with average or above-average scores.

Fastest internet service providers in Louisville

AT&T offers internet at speeds up to 5000 Mbps

EarthLink offers internet at speeds up to 5000 Mbps

Easy Internet Now offers internet at speeds up to 5000 Mbps

Windstream offers internet at speeds up to 2000 Mbps

AT&T delivers the fastest internet speeds in Louisville, Kentucky. It boasts an internet plan featuring up to 5,000 Mbps download speeds. Spectrum and Windstream also have gigabit plans, but they don’t match AT&T in terms of internet type and price.

Just like how Mine That Bird famously swept to the lead in the 135th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, AT&T’s gigabit plan vaults past the competition in the home stretch. It’s the cheapest of the gigabit plans, and it runs over a fiber network. Fiber is the fastest and most reliable internet around, always beating out cable and DSL. So if you can get it, go for it.

Cable is still a solid internet option, and you can get 940 Mbps speeds over Spectrum’s cable network. Its gigabit plan costs significantly more than AT&T’s, though, so get it only if AT&T isn’t available in your area. (Alas, fiber from AT&T is harder to find than its DSL internet option.)

And then there’s Windstream, which has an affordably priced fiber 1 gig plan, as well as a 2 Gig plan. However, Windstream is available only far southeast of the city, so it’s not likely you’ll be able to get these fiber plan unless you live just east or south of the Louisville International Airport or in areas farther out like Jeffersontown or Hillview.

    Louisville residential internet coverage

Along the border between Indiana and Kentucky is the city of Louisville, the famed home of racehorses, bourbon distilleries, baseball bats, and trailblazing indie rock bands. It’s a friendly city with a historic feel—and there’s plenty of options for high-speed internet and cheap Wi-Fi too.

Cable internet provider Spectrum covers the whole city of Louisville, plus the neighboring city of New Albany and many other nearby towns and communities across the Ohio River in Indiana. AT&T also delivers DSL and fiber across all of Louisville and New Albany, though its network doesn’t stretch quite as far, cutting off much of Indiana’s Harrison County.

Windstream isn’t available in most of Louisville. Coverage begins in areas around the Louisville International Airport, namely areas like Audubon Park, Poplar Hills, and south down to the Outer Loop. It’s available farther down past the Gene Snyder Freeway and out east in suburbs like Forest Hills and Jeffersontown.

Mediacom has a small service area in the northeast around Green Spring, Fincastle, Brownsboro Farm, and Hickory Hill.

Additionally, TOAST.net has a large and well-established presence in Louisville, covering nearly all of the city. However, coverage drops off in parts of Mount Washington around the intersections of Old Mill Road and the Mt. Washington Bypass.

Ohio Valley–based cable provider Limestone and Bracken Cablevision also has availability along a northwest bend in the Ohio River, in the neighborhoods of Portland and Shawnee.
