CenturyLink offers solid DSL internet in most of its footprint, with some areas supporting faster, cheaper fiber internet. The company doesn’t offer many promotions, but you can get paid if you refer a friend. It’s a nice perk, and you can earn up to $500 per year.
If you want to participate, visit the referral page and get a code. Then, give that code to the person you’re hoping to refer. If they sign up and keep the service active for 60 consecutive days, you’ll get your reward via PayPal.
Free installation is the only other deal CenturyLink regularly offers, but getting it depends on where you live and when you order.
There are no gift cards, free months of service, or offers of free mobile phone service in sight with CenturyLink, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Pricing is straightforward from day one, and you never have to worry about data limits, contracts, or early termination fees.

The kind of internet service you can get from CenturyLink depends entirely on where you live. Some areas can get DSL internet with speeds up to 140Mbps, but the farther you are from neighborhood infrastructure, the slower your connection will be. Regardless, all DSL plans ring in at the same price.
If you live in an area that’s wired for CenturyLink fiber, you’re in luck! You can choose between 500Mbps speeds (for less than you would pay for DSL) or gigabit speeds. These plans are much faster and more reliable than DSL, and you get Wi-Fi equipment rental for free. Installation is often included at no charge.
CenturyLink fees on internet service
CenturyLink takes it easy on fees—there are no overage, early cancellation, or network fees to worry about. However, you will see some taxes and surcharges added to your bill every month. Plus, CenturyLink DSL customers are charged $15 per month if they opt to rent CenturyLink’s combined modem/router gateway. If you would rather, you can buy one outright for $200.
Most new customers can get out of installation fees, but others may have to pay a one-time fee of up to $129. If you’re calling in to order, be sure to ask your account representative if they can waive this fee.

If you can get fiber internet, you can add Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone service to your CenturyLink bundle. If you get the Basic plan, you’ll get a free analog telephone adapter (ATA) so you can use any traditional landline phone. If you get the Professional plan, you’ll need to buy an IP phone directly from CenturyLink.
The VoIP plans include unlimited local and national long-distance calling.
The phones won’t work in power outages like traditional landlines would, but you can buy a battery backup separately.
If you can get only DSL from CenturyLink, you can sign up for a traditional landline phone with the Simply Unlimited Phone plan. You get unlimited nationwide calling and can pay extra if you need to make international calls. Plus, the phones work in power outages.
Are there added fees for phone service?
You may need to pay extra for installation if you get CenturyLink home phone service, but prices vary based on location. If you get a Professional plan, you will also need to pay for an IP phone for a one-time fee of $179.
If you want to ensure access to your phone during a power outage and have VoIP service, you’ll need to buy a battery backup for your internet gateway. Prices start at $140 for an 8-hour backup and $280 for a 24-hour backup. Be aware that even if you have one of these backups, you won’t be able to make calls in an internet outage.
Other than that, be prepared for standard taxes and fees like those imposed for 9-1-1 access, but they shouldn’t amount to more than a few dollars per month.
Can you bundle TV services with CenturyLink?
CenturyLink doesn’t offer TV or mobile phone services, so there’s no way to get bundle deals when you sign up.
However, you might be able to sign up for DISH or DIRECTV when you sign up for CenturyLink. You can combine your DIRECTV bill with your CenturyLink bill, but there are no discounts. All other TV services are billed separately.
If you prefer streaming services to traditional TV, you can access MyBundle.TV services through the CenturyLink site. Just type a list of the programs you love, and you’ll get a list of the best streaming services at different pricing tiers. Like with satellite TV services, streaming services are billed separately.
Either way, there’s good news: Most of CenturyLink’s DSL plans are fast enough to stream on one or two screens at a time on HD, and all its fiber internet plans are fast enough to stream in 4K on multiple screens, even while you download big game updates to your Xbox or upload your entire photo library to Dropbox.
Deals for low-income households
CenturyLink doesn’t offer specific plans for low-income households, but you may qualify for the federal Lifeline program, which offers a $9.25 monthly bill credit to certain families.
That discount is available on all CenturyLink internet plans.

My take on CenturyLink deals

CenturyLink offers straightforward plans and prices instead of gift cards, bundles, or short-term promotions, and I think customers benefit.
While perks sound nice, they can come with hoops to jump through and may even carry contracts with early termination fees. With promotional pricing, you can think you’re paying one price and set up autopay, only to have that price jump after a few months or a year. If you don’t read all the fine print or check your statement every month, you might not even notice.
Bundles aren’t quite as sneaky, but they can make it hard to know how much you’re paying for each service. That makes it hard to comparison shop and makes it hard to notice and understand price changes.
I know some coupon queens out there live for the deal, and I get it! If that’s you, bookmark my monthly deals page to see the latest deals from all the biggest providers. But if you would rather pay a set price and forget about the haggle, CenturyLink deserves a round of applause.
