Oakland Residential Internet Coverage

Oakland is currently one of the largest cities in California, and it's particularly known for its strong business communities. High-speed internet is a necessity in this region.

Through New Edge Networks, many neighborhoods scattered around Oakland can choose DSL or copper wireline internet. In the west, covered neighborhoods include Acorn, Prescott, Peralta, and Brookfield Village. There is minimal coverage throughout the central part of the city, with most covered neighborhoods lying in the southcentral part of the city. Eastern neighborhoods in the New Edge Networks service area include Redwood Heights, Piedmont Pines, and Glen Highlands.

Sonic.net has one of the largest networks in Oakland, with coverage extending far north and south of the city limits. The network runs through highly populated central areas like Oak Tree, Saint Elizabeth, Melrose, and Lake Merritt.

The same is true for Xfinity, one of the region's most well-known cable networks. Coverage reaches every part of Oakland and many communities lying to the north, south, east, and west of the city.

Last but not least, the fiber and DSL networks of AT&T offer service options to much of Oakland, as well.

Comcast internet can be really fast at times, but I've had connection issues frequently where I'm unable to connect and/or the internet is really slow. The price is extremely high in my opinion, specially if you combine it with a TV package. I've tried most of the other services available, and Comcast speed is definitely the best (even based on price). Customer Service sometimes is amazing, other times it has been mediocre.

Methodology

HighSpeedInternet.com compares internet providers within cities and metro areas to give customers the most relevant insights into their internet options. When comparing providers, we consider the following:

  • Provider coverage areas
  • Advertised speeds
  • Real-world speeds (speed test data)
  • Customer feedback
  • Other relevant localized data

We source localized coverage data displayed on our coverage maps from the FCC coverage database, which is updated every six months. For the most current summary of providers in your area, we recommend you use our zip code search tool, which offers the most recent coverage data straight from internet service providers (ISPs).

Our city overviews compare advertised provider speeds. We may also include real-world speed data gathered from millions of annual speed test results. To process our speed test data, we first filter out outliers and providers with low test counts. We then calculate speed averages with every ISP subject to the same parameters.

We gather ISP customer feedback data from our comprehensive annual surveys and direct customer feedback submitted to HighSpeedInternet.com. Unless stated otherwise, average ratings are calculated nationally.
